Hey guys, I benched 290lbs on Friday. I dunno if that’s actually a PR, I think I benched 290lbs x 1 when I was repping 275 x 3. Good thing I’ve gotten weaker. I just want to say that I contracted more muscles benching 290 than I have lifting anything else, including a 137kg/303lbs c+j or my 210kg/462lbs dead, or that one time I pulled 430lbs for a triple and my PECS cramped along with an external rotator around my posterior shoulder??? OOOOOHKAY???????
Same story, I blew up 280lbs surprisingly fast after a terribly dramatic challenging eccentric, then I did a 6-1-8 tempo bench at 290lbs. That’s a 6 second negative, a one count pause, and an 8 second concentric. It wasn’t fucking worth it. I’m surprised I didn’t injure myself doing it. Something in my lumbo-sacral area popped while doing it and my low back spasmed for a few minutes after, I was like fucking great, can’t wait to be injured over a lift I barely give a shit about.
So I bench 10lbs less than 300lbs, and 25lbs less than the only bench that truly matters. Mmm.
I also PRed my db curls, did 35lbs x 12 for a two rep PR. That was pretty surprising, I guess I should focus more on a slow and controlled negative.
As many of you know, despite being best friends with the guys who built 70s Big, I myself don’t actually wear 70s Big merchandise – because I’m not fucking 70s Big. “Adult Males > 200lbs.” OoohKAY, guess I’ll go fuck myself. Even the less definitive designs which just push a 70s Big way of life – which, at its roots, was something I think we could all agree to – drink coffee, eat chicken fried steak and coffee, lift heavy and “have fun” doing it, though Justin could have checked his serotonin privilege for that one – aren’t something that I can wear, because when people ask “What’s 70s Big,” and I explain it, they will invariably ask
“So why aren’t you bigger?”
Do you think I will look like I lift when I finally bench 315lbs? A few years ago I thought 225lbs was the magic number. Couldn’t have been more fucking wrong, considering I did this at a bw of 143lbs. Then it was 275lbs. Nope, not that it either. 315lbs? Will my pecs and delts be noticeable then? Surely my triceps will need to be moderately hypertrophied to bench 15lbs beyond the 300lbs barrier?
Every time I near a threshold benchmark like this, I always wonder – will I even look like I fucking lift x00 lbs??? Is it even worth the effort and potential for getting stapled or injured?
Maybe if I bench 315lbs, I can wear a 70s Big tanktop. Maybe 365lbs. Maybe it’ll never fucking happen.
